ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Students have the responsibility to learn and observe school procedures. Each student is expected to contribute to the development of a positive school community which supports self discipline and a mutual regard for each other and personal property.

Dewey College staff and teachers have the responsibility for the supervision and discipline of the students. Teachers communicate, reinforce and model standards of behaviour. The Principal is responsible for maintaining an orderly atmosphere which is conducive to learning. School policies emphasize consistency and fairness and must be supported by school staff.

GENERAL POLICY

Dewey College expects students to pursue their studies diligently, refrain from disruptive behaviour, and comply with the requests of school staff. They are expected to exercise due consideration for the safety of themselves and others, to exercise self discipline, and to maintain proper personal hygiene. Students are required to dress in a manner appropriate to the school environment.

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

The secondary school program is based on the credit system. A credit is granted for successful completion of a 110 hour course. To earn a credit, a student must achieve a grade of at least 50%. In order to graduate students must successfully complete 30 credits. To earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma a student must earn 18 compulsory credits, 12 additional optional credits, complete 40 hours of community involvement activities, and meet the Ontario provincial literacy requirement.

Attendance

Students are expected to arrive at school on time and attend classes regularly. Students who habitually miss class will suffer in the assessment process because their achievement cannot be fully assessed. All absences from classes count in the absence record, whatever the reason. Students are expected to have the self-discipline and responsibility to ensure regular attendance.

Attendance and non attendance must be recorded on a daily basis. The attendance roll is sent to the office after every class and an attendance report sent to staff weekly. Teachers maintain their own record of student attendance. Staff is expected to encourage students to be in class on time and to bring to the Principal¡¯s attention students who are persistently late for class.

Absences

A note with the day, date, reason and a signature of the student is required for an absence to be approved. Students must obtain an in-slip from the office in order to be allowed into class.

Lates

It is important that students be on time for their classes. Students who are more than 1/2 hour late for class will be marked absent for that class. Students who are late should go directly to the classroom. The teacher records lates.

Student Residence

Students who live in residence must follow the procedures set out by the school.

When students arrive at Dewey College you will go through new student orientation. A part of this orientation is Residence Policy when students will be given a written copy of the residence rules.

See Residence Application.
